  • Maintenance Update from Director of Agronomy- David Hardesty

The Agronomy Team has been working very hard to complete aerification of the fairways and have finished holes 1 through 12 and the driving range. However, due to today’s rain we couldn’t complete the aerification process on holes 13 through 18.  Pending weather, we will finish this process next Monday and open the Front Nine for play while we finish our work on the Back Nine. The goal of aerification goal is to remove as much thatch and excess grass as possible during aerification.  Take a look at what goes into the process.

    First step, Vertical mowing fairways

The blades on the reels are vertical rather than the typical horizontal blades we use on a day to day basis.  This allows us to penetrate the canopy and remove excess growth from underneath.

    Next, Aerification:

We used 7/8″ hollow tines, which pull out a plug 7/8″ in diameter about 3″ deep.  This physically removes more thatch, loosens the soil, and allows air to get to the roots.

Once the plugs dry we use machines to break them up.  This allows for the dirt to remain in the fairway and separates the thatch from the plug.

Once the plugs are broken up, the thatch is picked up with a sweeper and hauled away.  The remaining debris is then blown off and we are ready to open for play.

We are pleased to see the rain after the extreme dry conditions, however, carts will leave muddy tracks in the fairways during even moderately wet weather and we will be limiting carts during rain events for the next week until we begin to heal.  Thanks for your patience.
